Benzodiazepines are medications prescribed for their depressant capabilities.  There are a variety of benzodiazepines, and they come in capsules of varying colors, depending on strength and manufacturer.

  • Common Brand Names/Street Names

Downers, Tranqs, Valium, Xanex

  • Uses

The benzodiazepine family of depressants are prescribed to produce sedation, induce sleep, relieve anxiety, and to prevent seizures.

  • Dangers

Seizures, respiratory depression, decreased heart rate, weak and rapid pulse, coma, possible death.

  • What to look for

Pills and injection paraphernalia, slurred speech, disorientation, drunken behavior without odor of alcohol, cold and clammy skin, dilated pupils, shallow respiration.

  • Detection Limits

Benzodiazepines can be detected in urine from 1 to 14 days after use, depending on the type used.
