Barbiturates

 
  • What is it?

Barbiturates are medications prescribed for their central nervous system depression capabilities.  There are a variety of barbiturates, and they come in capsules of varying colors, depending on strength and manufacturer.

  • Common Brand Names/Street Names

Downers, Dolls, Reds, Tuinal, Rainbows, Yellows, Blues, Goofballs, M&M's, Red Devils, Phenobarbital, Butalbital, Secobarbital, Pentobarbital.

  • Uses

Barbiturates are prescribed as sedatives, hypnotics, anesthetics, and anticonvulsants.

  • Dangers

Seizures, respiratory depression, decreased heart rate, rigidity and painful muscle contractions, emotional instability, coma, possible overdose and death, especially when mixed with alcohol.

  • What to look for

Capsules of varying colors, longer peroids of rest or sleep, dizziness, cold and clammy skin, depression, decreased alertness and muscle control, intoxication and slurred speech, drowsiness.

  • Detection Limits

Barbiturates can be detected in urine testing up to 1 to 3 days after use.  Phenobarbital, a specific type of barbiturates, can be detected in the urine up to 1 to 3 weeks after use.
