Amphetamines were initially brought into the medicinal world as a substitute for ephedra, as the effects are similar.  Today, amphetamines are widely used in medications, however, it is also abused for the sometimes euphoric effects.

It is important to note that using ANY prescriptions without a valid prescription is ILLEGAL as well as dangerous.

  • Uses

Amphetamines are widely used in medicinal prescriptions to treat a variety of diseases including ADD, severe depression, Parkinson's disease, narcolepsy, angina, and to aid in weight loss.

  • Dangers

Disorientation, severe depression, paranoia, possible hallucinations, increase in blood pressure, fatigue.

  • What to look for

Tablets of varying colors, long periods without rest or sleep, loss of appetite, anxiety, irritability, rapid speech, tremors, mood elevation.

  • Detection Limits

Amphetamines can be tested in urine, saliva, and hair.  In urine, amphetamines can be tested up to 1 to 3 days after use; 24 to 36 hours for saliva; and up to 90 days in hair.

 

Methamphetamine

  • What is it?

Methamphetamine is a synthetic stimulant that is highly addictive.

  • Street Names

Batu, Blade, Cristy, Crystal, Crystal glass, Hanyak, Hiropon, Hot ice, Kaksonjae, L.A. glass, L.A. ice, Quartz, Shabu, Shards, Stove top, Super ice, Tina, Ventana, Vidrio.

  • Uses

While there are a very few medications that have methamphetamines in them, most methamphetamine use is illicit.

  • Dangers

Disorientation, severe depression, paranoia, possible hallucinations, increase in blood pressure, fatigue.

A methamphetamine laboratory poses its own risks as the chemicals used to synthesize the drug are extremely volatile and may ignite or explode if mixed or stored improperly.  Also, the fumes from the drug production can cause shortness of breath, cough, chest pain, intoxication, dizziness, nausea, disorientation, lack of coordination, pulmonary edema, and chemical pneumonitis; and if the chemicals come into contact with a person's skin it can cause severe burns.

MDMA/Ecstasy

 

  • What is it?

MDMA/Ecstasy (3, 4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine) is a synthetic drug that was originally developed in Germany as an appetite suppressant but is widely abused today for its hallucinogenic effects.

  • Street Names

B-bombs, Clarity, Cristal, Decadence, Disco biscuit, E, Essence, Eve, Go, Hug drug, Iboga, Love drug, Morning shot, Pollutants, Scooby snacks, Speed for lovers, Sweeties, Wheels, X.

  • Uses

There is currently no medicinal use for MDMA, however, it is widely abused at raves and is used illegally for assistance in date rape.

  • Dangers

Dehydration, hyperthermia, heart or kidney failure, brain damage, Parkinson's disease, death.

  • What to look for

Tablets of various colors and shapes and generally imprinted with a logo; confusion, depression, anxiety, sleeplessness, craving for the drug, paranoia, muscle tension, involuntary teeth clenching, nausea, blurred vision, tremors, rapid eye movement, sweating, chills, increased heart rate and blood pressure.

  • Detection Limits

MDMA can be detected in urine, saliva, and hair.  In urine, it can be detected 1 to 3 days; in saliva, 24 to 36 hours; in hair, up to 90 days.
